چکیده

The HCOOH molecule represents the simplest organic acid which is also supposed to play a role in the interstellar formation of more complicated biomolecules. Its interaction with slow electrons in the gas phase is analysed in the present work with the view of providing specific structural and dynamical information on those resonant states which lead to different transient negative ions (TNIs) formation. The latter resonant states in turn guide molecular fragmentation along different pathways, forming HCOO−, O− and OH− fragments as experimentally observed. The present calculations, carried out at the equilibrium molecular geometry, indeed support the presence of two main resonances within the expected energy range and further indicate the presence of antibonding nodal planes in the excess electron resonant wave function features which could explain the observed fragmentation products formed during the subsequent dissociative break-up. 3 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Nanoscopic models for radiobiological damage: metastable precursors of dissociative electron attachment to formic acid F A Gianturco and R R Lucchese Total and positronium formation cross sections for positron scattering from H2O and HCOOH

We report experimental results for electron scattering from formic acid (HCOOH). A set of differential cross-sections is provided for elastic scattering at incident electron energies from 1.8 to 50 eV. Integral and momentum transfer cross-sections have also been derived from these results. Our results are compared, where possible, with recent theoretical calculations.

Low energy electron attachment to condensed formic acid

Dissociative electron attachment to formic acid in the condensed phase is studied using improved mass spectrometric detection of the negative ion fragments. The desorbed yields are measured as a function of incident electron energy in the range between 3 to 20 eV. Unlike previous work, the formation of the dehydrogenated anion HCOO ̄ is observed and the signal to noise ratio is much higher for a...

Experimental evidence on the mechanism of dissociative electron attachment to formic acid.

Two mechanisms for dissociative electron attachment in HCOOH, the formation of HCOO(-)+H, were proposed in the literature: (i) via a direct electron attachment into a σ* resonance, augmented by dipole binding of the incident electron [G. A. Gallup et al., Phys. Rev. A 79, 042701 (2009)], and (ii) with the 1.8 eV π* resonance as a doorway state, linked to the products by symmetry lowering-distor...

Dissociative electron attachment to unstable molecules and slow fragmentation of metastable molecular anions

Recent experimental investigations of dissociative electron attachment to unstable molecules and free radicals are reviewed along with observations of metastable negatively charged ions. Measurements have been made with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer in Belfast and also, for metastable ions, with a double focussing twin field mass spectrometer in Innsbruck. Electron attachment to unstable C...

Bound anionic states of adenine.

Anionic states of nucleic acid bases are involved in DNA damage by low-energy electrons and in charge transfer through DNA. Previous gas phase studies of free, unsolvated nucleic acid base parent anions probed only dipole-bound states, which are not present in condensed phase environments, but did not observe valence anionic states, which for purine bases are thought to be adiabatically unbound...
